Gerard Pique Promotes a Fantasy Football Platform Sorare
Professional soccer player Gerard Pique has invested in Sorare, a fantasy football website, leading to his selection as the company's strategic advisor.
Investment by the Barcelona centre-back takes the company's overall seed to €m ($8.6m), in addition to US-based fund Cassius Family.
The football fantasy website lets players buy and sell digital cards for professional footballers. The business said this year that 80 clubs have entered the network, including Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Porto and Zenit.
Sorare revenue increased by more than 1000% in the course of 2020, according to a statement announcing the acquisition. Overall, the company reports that the markets for fantasy football and sports cards are worth $5.4 billion and 18.6 billion, respectively.
Pique would follow current Sorare board members including Christain Miele as well as co-founders Nicolas Julia and Adrien Montfort.
“I see a huge potential in the sports gaming segment in a digital economy where the attention of audiences is the single most important unit of currency. I’m looking forward to helping Sorare expand their partnerships with football leagues, clubs, and players worldwide to build the best fantasy experience that exists.”

Sorare CEO Nicolas Julia also shared his enthusiasm at pique's selection as an "an active entrepreneur" inside the team who is redefining the sports and entertainment industries.
