Macau's Judicial Police have detained many suspects reportedly engaged in casino money frauds and the use of counterfeit currencies. Many of the recently arrested persons was tied to last year's suspected offenses.

Macau's Police Arrests Citizens Casino Money Theft Reportedly

Macau's gaming market has suffered from the outbreak of COVID-19 respiratory disease. Regardless of the effects of COVID-19, market is steadily catching up. In spite of this, reports of bribery are growing and the local authorities are investigating and arresting persons involved in such criminal acts. The Judiciary Police (JP) announced on Thursday this week that it has detained many individuals implicated in recent frauds. With that in mind, some of the people that were detained refer to events that date back to last year.

A 51-year-old lady was arrested earlier this week, after a casino incident was reported. The lady had reportedly removed $3,900 from a casino gaming table. She was allegedly then attempting to retrieve them when she was found by casino workers and called the JP to apprehend her.

A China-mainlander had been detained after attempting to exchange yuan for Hong Kong dollars (HKD). The 29-year-old man was in a casino while attempting to swap around $2,32m in yuan to HKD but was detained by the guards of the casino.

The JP arrested a individual last month for using counterfeit bills in exchange for real currency. The man was arrested on October 29, following an suspected attempt to swap $12,900 for real money in bogus currency.

Many Charges In Connection With Suspected Bribery And Theft

Another October event concerns two suspects arrested in connection with allegations of casino thefts that date back to June last year. Since receiving an anonymous letter from the casino boss, the JP immediately identified the suspected fraudsters and arrested them. The pair consisted of a male 48-year-old and a female 33-year-old who had previously conducted six robberies at the same casino. In comparison, an attempted one-time burglary had taken place at another venue. The couple has reportedly taken a total of $21,000 from the robberies.

Two men were arrested on Tuesday this week over charges that they scammed a woman out of 500,000 yuan. In October last year, the two men allegedly scammed a businesswoman while playing a "show your hand" game. The lady initially was winning but she lost 500,000 yuan at some stages. She then paid the debt and went back to the mainland. The woman discovered at some point that she was defrauded and reported the case to Macau police on 19 November last year. The two men have been arrested this week but the probe into the JP is still underway.

Another case concerns the arrest of a 33-year-old male and the JP accused her of theft. The man was purportedly attempting to trade 617,000 yuan for HKD. The male gives his victim a bag full of money but the victim has not investigated the money thoroughly. The suspected fraudster had combined counterfeit money with actual cash. The male was arrested after the JP was informed but the case is still underway.
