Anyway, this Western Frontier game from Microgaming doesn't have John or Clint in them, but just a wild dark grey horse as the hero. The cowboys were probably nicely sleeping in the wagon! Hehehe.

As cowboy movies are usually old ones, so is this game. Western Frontier plays with just 15 paylines, it saves a bit of money in the long run, and is also my favourite betting size too - I always tend to start my play with $0.15 bets for games that have 20 or more paylines. That Horse is the Wild symbol in the game, but it doesn't pay anything for itself, nor does it double any wins with it, except during the free spins play. The Horseshoe is the Scatter symbol, paying a low 66.6x the total bet for getting 5 of them, and triggers the Indian Feature game with 8 free spins - only wins with a Wild symbol are doubled. The other symbols pay from 40x down to 6.6x the total bet, making the paytable a low one.

Getting 3 or more Horseshoe Scatters during the free spins awards a retrigger of 8 more free spins. During the free spins, each appearing Horse is collected into a counter at the top, to determine the free spins number and multiplier for the following Cowboy Feature game, from 8 free spins with a 2x multiplier, up to 16 free spins with a 6x multiplier, depending on the total number of Horses collected. Unfortunately, only wins with any Wild symbol gets this multiplier, and wins without any Wild symbol do not get multiplied, so this sucks!

Anyway, I've played Western Frontier on numerous occasions, trying to get a better win than what I have gotten so far, which is only 124x my bet amount, but never getting it. Even getting those 16 free spins with a 6x multiplier couldn't produce any better wins, so this much was disappointing indeed. Perhaps Western Frontier is never meant to produce big wins, what with its low paytable, so that didn't keep me interested in the game any longer. Too bad!

That was the situation when I tried out Western Frontier slot at first time but my first impression wasn’t exactly what I expected. Somehow the interface of the game is not too attractive for me and thought it’s simple and solid but the graphics are not detailed or high quality, the symbols are not nice or likeable and the overall visual effect just can’t give me the legendary atmosphere, so it is a forgettable pictorial work for my taste.

I can’t say the quality of game segment totally changed my opinion about this game and I think that’s enough if I mention that the most paying 5 of a kind win with Gun & Tomahawk symbols only awards 600 times of line bet which is a little poor and hard to say it would be competitive. At this 15-payline slot the Mustang figure is the real Jolly Joker as the success largely depends on the appearance of this emblem. It serves as Wild with substituting but without multiplying function but has more important part in Free Spin feature.

3 or more decorated Horseshoe pictogram activate the Indian Feature which consists of 8 free spins. During that session the Wild get an x 2 multiplying ability but what even more important the number of all appearing Wild symbol is collected and determine according to a special system to what condition will be apply to the automatically starting Cowboy feature. If during the 8 free spins just 3 or less Wild arrive to the reels the Cowboy feature will be 8 free spin and the wins with Wild will be multiplied by x 2. If we’re lucky enough to get 16 or more Mustang during the original 8 extra spins the Cowboy feature will be played with the condition of 16 free spins with x 6 multiplier. Both Indian and Cowboy feature can be re-triggered.

Essentially, we get 2 free spin sessions for just one triggering combination which is not a bad business at all but based on my experience these free spins are not that rewarding what they might sound. I had one time when the cumulative 16 extra games barely gave me back the double amount of my total bet which is was my normal, $1.20. Definitely, the chance is there to win big but whether it will be ever realized, it’s a good question.

Overall, Western Frontier is a disappointment for me in every aspect. Unfortunately I don’t find here any game section that would excels (maybe the gamble feature is the one what I like here) and I’m sure this slot is not among the ones that Microgaming should proud of. Every time I have a feeling as this product would be an unfinished business from the developers part because there are so many things that would require smaller or bigger improvement. So I think this game has not much chance to be my favourite slot or even to be on my most frequently played list.

Graphics wise not exactly state-of-the-art, but who's caring if you're winning right!

It's a pity the game has only 15 paylines, I often wondering what if Western Frontier has 20+ paylines, I could win really big but I can keep on dreaming about it because it will never happen.
